Brazil Health & Safety

Almost everyone who travels to Brazil has heard or read about the crime that plagues Rio and Sao Paulo and some of the other cities. Muggings, purse snatching, and night time assaults with weapons have increased over the years, so it’s important to dress down and avoid wearing expensive watches and jewelry. It's also a good idea to limit the amount of cash you carry. Hotel safes should be used for valuables, as well as for your passport. Most cities in Brazil have living areas known as favelas where the people live in extreme poverty and that is the catalyst for an extraordinary amount of violent crimes. It’s best to avoid these areas unless you’re with a tour group and even then use common sense and caution.
