Once known as the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, Prague has been the economic, political and cultural center for the Czech people for more than 1100 years. Sitting on the banks of the River Vltava, Prague’s metropolitan area has a population of more than 1.9 million people. Prague’s history dates back thousands of years. It originally was just a castle called Vysehrad. The city has always been an important trading center in Europe and it continued to flourish through the centuries despise the religious battles that are part of its colorful history. The velvet revolution in 1989 was a modern day turning point for the city. This student backed protest was put down by the riot police, but the mentality of the city was forever changed. Prague split from Czechoslovakia in 1993 and became the capital of the Czech Republic. The floods in 2002 severely damaged the city’s underground transportation system and several buildings filled with water and had to be restored.

Prague is known as a tourist destination, especially for Europeans who appreciate its rich history and interesting people. Prague ranks sixth behind London, Paris, Rome, Madrid and Berlin, because the architecture of the city is so diversified. The building in Prague represent Baroque, Art Nouveau, Renaissance, Gothic, Neo- Classical, Cubist and ultra modern designs that are in pristine condition.
