The Weather in Costa Rica

Costa Rica may be a small country but there’s a lot going on when it comes to the weather. There are several climate zones, and they are all different. Even though it has a tropical climate, the various elevations around the country create different weather patterns. The city of Guanacaste sits in the lowlands and has a dry climate, while Montverde is misty and foggy because it’s a highland city. San Jose, in the central Valley, has the best climate with average daily temperatures of 79 degrees.

The country’s average temperature is around 81 degrees, and it can feel sticky during the day. The coolest weather is in November, December and January, and the rainy season is from May to November. It doesn’t rain much from December through April, but September and October are very rainy months. Some of the mountain areas can get 25 feet of rain a year, but Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast has its own microclimate, where it’s hot and humid all year long, even though the trade winds blow continuously. It can rain just about any time of the year on the Caribbean coast, but the sun usually shines 12 hours a day.
