Is Austria Safe?

Austria is safe in fact, it is considered one of the safest countries on the planet, but there are pickpockets and gypsies working in Vienna and Salzburg as well as in some of the other larger cities. Prostitutes and thiefs walk the streets in some areas of these cities, but the violent crime rate is low.

Common sense is the best defense against petty crime. Following the local crime alerts and keeping valuables in hotel safes will make the trip more secure and pleasurable. It's always a good idea to travel in pairs or in a group after dark and avoid the areas where the night partiers are looking for more than just a good time.
