Is Peru Safe?

Peru relies on tourism for a large percentage of their revenue, so there are plenty of police around the tourist areas, especially plain clothed officers. Assaults on tourists are rare, but purse snatching and pickpockets do frequent the tourist areas, as well as bus and train stations, and crowded streets. It’s best to stay away from remote areas, and you should travel in pairs at night, especially after leaving a nightclub or restaurant. Taxi drivers can play con games, especially when it comes to switching hostels for a commission. It’s always a good idea to use hotel safes, and carry cash in a money belt or leg pouch that’s secure, and out of sight.

Most of the people living in Peru are honest, kind, and respectable, but there are a few locals that take advantage of tourists, and may even steal backpacks if they are unattended or they may pick your pockets on a crowded street. It's safe to say that you won’t be exposed to petty crimes unless you leave your common sense at home.
