Turkey Visa & Entry Requirements

Turkey Visa & Entry Requirements

Plan your Turkey trip: Where to go · When to visit · Where to stay · Getting around · Visa & entry · Safety

Entry requirements for Turkey, officially Türkiye, depend on nationality, passport type, purpose of travel and length of stay. Rules can change, so travelers should always verify current requirements with official Turkish authorities before booking non-refundable travel.

Do You Need a Visa?

Some nationalities can visit Turkey visa-free for short tourism stays, while others need an e-Visa or a visa issued by a Turkish embassy or consulate. The exact rule depends on the travel document you hold.

The official Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides nationality-specific visa information, and the official e-Visa portal allows eligible travelers to check whether they can apply electronically.

Turkey e-Visa

The e-Visa is an official electronic document for eligible travelers visiting for tourism or commerce. Eligibility and conditions vary by nationality. Some applicants may need to satisfy additional requirements shown during the official online application process.

Use only the official e-Visa website at evisa.gov.tr. Be cautious with third-party websites that charge additional service fees or imitate official branding.

Passport Validity

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes a general requirement for passport validity extending at least 60 days beyond the permitted duration of stay. Its example for a 90-day stay is 150 days of validity on entry. Exemptions apply, including certain national-ID arrangements and diplomatic or official passports.

The ministry separately recommends at least six months of validity from arrival. Check the rule for your nationality and document type; this recommendation and the legal minimum are different.

United States and United Kingdom Travelers

Checked against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 23 September 2026: ordinary U.S. passport holders and ordinary British passport holders traveling for tourism were listed by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as visa-exempt for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This does not cover every British nationality category: British National (Overseas), British Subject and British Protected Person passport holders have different rules. Verify your exact status before departure.

European Travelers

Many European passport holders have visa-free short-stay arrangements, but rules are not identical for every nationality or passport type. Check the official country-by-country list rather than assuming a general “Europe rule.”

Work, Study and Long Stays

Tourist visa exemptions and e-Visas do not replace the correct authorization for work, study or residence. Travelers planning these activities should contact a Turkish diplomatic mission and the relevant Turkish authorities.

At the Border

Having a visa or e-Visa does not automatically guarantee entry. Border authorities may ask for supporting information relating to your trip. Carry details of accommodation, onward or return travel and sufficient funds if required.

Traveling with Children

Children need appropriate travel documents. The official e-Visa system states that each traveler, including infants and children, requires a separate e-Visa when an e-Visa is applicable.

Customs and Restricted Items

Customs rules apply to cash, alcohol, tobacco, medicines, food, cultural objects and commercial goods. If you are carrying unusual quantities or valuable items, verify current customs rules before travel.

Where to Check Official Information

Use the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information page and the official e-Visa portal.

Travel Tip: Check visa rules again shortly before departure, even if you visited Turkey recently. Entry policies can change by nationality, passport type and purpose of travel.

Visa-Free Does Not Mean Document-Free

Travelers who do not need a visa still need an acceptable travel document and must meet entry conditions. Airlines may check documentation before boarding, and Turkish border authorities make the final entry decision.

Multiple Entries and Length of Stay

Do not assume that every visa or exemption allows the same number of entries or the same stay. Some rules are expressed as a maximum number of days within a rolling period. Track your travel dates carefully if you make repeated visits.

Transit Through Turkey

Transit requirements depend on whether you remain airside, pass immigration, change airports or leave the terminal. Travelers connecting between IST and SAW necessarily enter Turkey and should check entry rules accordingly.

Proof of Onward Travel and Accommodation

Border officers may request supporting evidence depending on circumstances. Keep your first accommodation details, return or onward itinerary and travel-insurance information accessible.

Passport Damage and Blank Pages

Airlines and border authorities can reject badly damaged travel documents. Before departure, inspect your passport and make sure it meets the requirements for your itinerary and any onward destination.
