Family Travel Destinations: The Undiscovered Island Of Menorca

Menorca Island, Spain

Looking for a beautiful, out of the way escape for you and your family? One of the best places to find a relaxing and enjoyable family holiday is Menorca, an island off the South coast of Spain. A beautiful location full of rich history, pristine beaches, and extraordinary natural sights, the best part of Menorca is that it is still largely undiscovered. Not crowded with excessive tourism, it is rumored that a personal beach is an easy thing to find. A relaxed atmosphere makes it a perfect family travel destination, and the diversity of activities possible means there is something for everybody. Here are a few of the highlights:

Nature and Wildlife

More than seventy-five percent of the island is protected, and for good reason! Some of the last members of many dwindling species reside here, including sea turtles and a multitude of birds. Hike the trail around the circumference of the island to catch a glimpse, or take a horseback ride around the same route, enjoying the spectacular natural views and omnipresence of the sea.

Beaches

Smooth stone in the north and warm sand in the south, Menorca is home to countless beaches--even the most popular of which are not crowded. The law allows you to sleep on the beach if it is too dark to keep hiking to a hotel, so perhaps a long trek is in order?

History and Heritage

A rich history lies in Menorca's preserved buildings and landmarks. From unexplained prehistoric structures to its more recent history of colonialism and conflict, one could spend days delving into its secrets. Look for Museu de Minorca and La Mola Fortress for an especially enthralling visit.

Glass Bottomed Cruises

Home of the second largest natural deep water port in the world, Menorca offers you the rare opportunity to see the underwater glories of the ocean. You can find plenty of glass bottomed cruises that offer complete packages for a fantastic trip.

Distillery

Menorca has its own gin, crafted in the distillery that was built during the eighteenth century. Distinctly aromatic and quite tasty, try a sip here, as it's only offered in a few select retailers elsewhere.
